Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Vaticano84? The name actually makes sense – it’s literally at number 84 on Viale Vaticano, which sounds obvious but half the hotels in Rome seem to have addresses that bear no relation to their names. This place sits right in the Trionfale neighborhood, and I mean right there where you can practically see the Vatican walls from some of the upper floor windows.
The location is honestly pretty brilliant if you’re planning to hit the Vatican Museums (and let’s be real, you probably are). Instead of that brutal trek most tourists make from the city center, you’re looking at maybe a 5-minute walk – I timed it because I’m weird like that. The Trionfale area has this residential feel that’s way more relaxed than staying near the Colosseum or Trevi Fountain. There’s a fantastic little café called Bar Trionfale just around the corner where locals actually grab their morning espresso, and trust me, their cornetti are better than anything you’ll find in the tourist zones. The metro connection at Ottaviano-San Pietro is close enough to reach easily, but far enough that you’re not dealing with the constant crowd noise that echoes up from those underground stations.
What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually know Rome – not just the major sites, but practical stuff like which entrance to use for St. Peter’s Basilica to avoid the longest lines (spoiler: it’s not the obvious one), and where to find decent dinner after 10 PM when half the restaurants have already closed their kitchens. The rooms themselves feel more like a well-designed apartment than a hotel room, with enough space to actually unpack your suitcase instead of living out of it for a week. The bathrooms are properly modern – I know that sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many 4-star places in Rome still have those tiny shower stalls where you practically have to step outside to wash your hair. The air conditioning works well too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with Roman summers and all that walking around ancient ruins in the heat. My only minor complaint? The WiFi gets a bit spotty on the higher floors, but honestly, that might be a blessing in disguise when you’re trying to disconnect and enjoy the city. The breakfast spread is solid without being overwhelming – proper Italian coffee, fresh pastries, and they don’t try to force some weird international buffet situation on you. Sometimes simple done well beats fancy done poorly, and Vaticano84 gets that balance right.
