You know what struck me first about Vatican Grand Suite? The name makes it sound way fancier than it actually is – and honestly, that’s not a bad thing. I mean, this is a solid 3-star place that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, which I actually appreciated after staying at too many overpromising hotels in Rome.

The location on Via dei Gracchi is pretty brilliant if you ask me. You’re in Prati, which locals will tell you is where Romans actually live and work, not just where tourists stumble around with gelato. It’s about a 10-minute walk to St. Peter’s (I timed it), but here’s the thing – you can duck into any of the cafés along the way for proper espresso at local prices. The Ottaviano metro stop is close enough that you’ll use it, and there’s this little alimentari around the corner where the owner, this older guy with paint-stained hands, makes incredible sandwiches for like 4 euros. The street itself can get a bit noisy during morning rush hour – Romans love their Vespas – but it quiets down nicely in the evenings.

The rooms are what you’d expect from a place with a 7.6 rating. Clean, functional, nothing that’ll make you call home about it, but nothing that’ll ruin your trip either. The beds are actually decent (I’m picky about mattresses), and the AC works well enough during those brutal July afternoons. What I really liked was the little touches – they stock the minibar with local stuff, not just overpriced Coke, and the shower pressure is surprisingly good for this part of the city. The décor is sort of caught between traditional and modern, which sounds awkward but somehow works. Check-in was smooth, though the front desk staff’s English varies depending on who’s working – the morning shift spoke better English than the evening crew, but everyone was helpful enough. One thing though – if you’re planning to stay during Easter or Christmas, book way ahead because the Vatican proximity means this place fills up fast, and honestly, the prices jump quite a bit during those times. But for most of the year, it’s a solid choice if you want to be near the Vatican without paying Vatican-adjacent prices.

  The area is quite and very safe, unlike other touristic areas.
