The Westin Excelsior, Rome Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to The Westin Excelsior, Rome on Via Vittorio Veneto feels like stepping into old Hollywood glamour — you know, the kind of place where movie stars would have stayed in the 1960s. This five-star hotel has this grand, almost theatrical entrance that makes you feel important just walking through the doors. The lobby is all marble and crystal chandeliers, but honestly, it’s the kind of luxury that feels earned rather than flashy. You can tell this place has stories to tell, and the staff carries themselves with that particular Roman confidence that somehow makes everything seem effortless.

Location & Neighborhood

The location on Via Veneto is actually perfect if you want to be in the heart of Rome without dealing with the tourist chaos around the Colosseum every morning. You’re literally a ten-minute walk from the Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain is close enough that you can pop over for those early morning photos before the crowds arrive. What I really love about this spot is that Via Veneto itself has this sophisticated energy — there are elegant cafes and boutiques right outside, plus you’re close enough to Villa Borghese that you can escape into the park when the city gets overwhelming. Couples seem to get this location particularly well, which makes sense because there’s something inherently romantic about this neighborhood.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in had these impossibly high ceilings and windows that actually opened — something you don’t always get in luxury hotels these days. The bed situation is no joke here; I mean, I’m usually a light sleeper, but I slept like I was in a coma every single night. The linens feel expensive in that way where you want to ask where they got them, and the pillows have just the right amount of give. The marble bathroom is spacious enough that you’re not bumping into things, and the shower pressure is exactly what you need after walking around Rome all day.

Breakfast & Dining

Breakfast here is where they really show off — the buffet setup covers everything from classic Italian pastries to American-style options, plus they actually do vegetarian and vegan choices well (not just as an afterthought). The continental spread includes some really good local cheeses and cured meats, and the coffee is proper Italian espresso, not the watered-down hotel version you sometimes get. I found myself lingering over breakfast longer than usual, partly because the dining restaurant has these big windows overlooking the street, so you can people-watch while you eat. It’s one of those meals where you don’t feel rushed, which is rare in a busy city hotel.

Why Guests Love It

What really sets this place apart is how it manages to feel both grand and comfortable at the same time. The service hits that sweet spot where they’re attentive without being hovering, and the location gives you easy access to everything without making you feel like you’re staying in Times Square. You’re getting genuine luxury here — the kind that comes from attention to detail rather than just expensive furniture. For couples especially, there’s something about the combination of the elegant neighborhood, the comfortable rooms, and that distinctly Roman sense of style that just works.

The hotel has a stunning entrance and grand interior. The rooms were tastefully furnished with regal wallpaper and a chandelier. You can definitely feel this hotel would have been grand in its hay day. Breakfast met expectation. Nice to have the small pool and sauna option.
