You know that feeling when you walk into a hotel and immediately think “okay, this is going to be good”? That’s exactly what happened when I first stepped into The First Musica. It’s tucked away on Lungotevere dei Mellini in the Prati district – and honestly, this location is pretty brilliant. Most tourists get stuck near the Colosseum or Termini Station, but Prati is where actual Romans live and work. You’re literally a fifteen-minute walk to the Vatican (I timed it), but you’re also surrounded by proper neighborhood cafes and that amazing covered market on Via Cola di Rienzo where locals actually shop.

The hotel itself feels like someone took a classic Roman palazzo and gave it a music-themed makeover without going overboard – there are subtle nods to composers and instruments throughout, but it’s tasteful, not cheesy. The rooms are genuinely spacious by European standards, and here’s something I really appreciated: the windows actually open, which you can’t take for granted in Rome. My room faced the Tiber, and while you can hear some traffic during the day, it’s surprisingly quiet at night. The beds are that perfect firmness where you sink in just enough, and the linens feel expensive in that way that makes you want to check the thread count. What really got me though was the bathroom – marble everywhere, rainfall shower that actually has pressure, and toiletries that smell like bergamot and cedar.

The staff here really knows their stuff. The concierge (I think his name was Marco) didn’t just point me toward the obvious tourist spots – he actually suggested this incredible little osteria about three blocks away where I had some of the best cacio e pepe of my life. Check-in was smooth, no hovering or pushy upselling, just efficient and friendly. Breakfast happens on the rooftop terrace, and I mean, the view of St. Peter’s dome while you’re having your cappuccino is pretty hard to beat. The spread is more curated than massive – really good pastries, fresh fruit, proper Italian coffee obviously – but everything tastes like they actually care about quality. One small thing: the elevator is vintage and charming but also pretty slow, so if you’re in a rush, plan accordingly. But honestly, that’s about the only complaint I have. The whole place has this relaxed elegance that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere special without being stuffy about it. Plus, being in Prati means you’re close to some fantastic shopping on Via del Corso, but far enough from the crowds that you can actually breathe.
