The First Arte – Preferred Hotels & Resorts Overview
Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of Roman hotels, and honestly? The First Arte completely caught me off guard. You walk into this place on Via del Vantaggio – which is basically this quiet side street that connects the Spanish Steps area to the Tiber – and it’s like someone took everything that’s usually pretentious about luxury hotels and just… didn’t do that. The lobby has this incredible contemporary art collection (hence the name, I guess), but it’s not screaming “look how fancy we are!” It’s more like walking into someone’s really well-curated apartment, if that someone happened to have impeccable taste and unlimited funds.
What really gets me is the location – you’re literally a three-minute walk from the Spanish Steps, but you’re tucked away enough that you don’t hear the tourist chaos at night. Via del Vantaggio is one of those streets that Romans actually use to cut through from the river to the shopping district, so you get this authentic feel of being part of the neighborhood rather than just visiting it. I mean, there’s this tiny wine bar around the corner that I never would have found if I hadn’t been wandering back to the hotel after dinner one night. The staff – and this is where the Preferred Hotels thing really shows – they know their stuff. Not in that rehearsed concierge way, but like they actually live in Rome and have opinions about where you should eat (skip the tourist traps near the fountain, obviously).
The rooms are what you’d expect from a 5-star place, but with these thoughtful touches that make you realize someone actually thought about how people use hotel rooms. Like, the bathroom lighting is perfect for putting on makeup, and there’s enough space to actually unpack without living out of your suitcase. You know what surprised me most? How quiet it is. Rome can be pretty noisy, especially in the centro storico, but something about the way this building is positioned – maybe it’s the courtyard setup – you sleep really well. I was there in late spring when the city gets busy, and I barely heard any street noise. The only downside, if I’m being completely honest, is that it’s almost too nice to leave. You’ll find yourself wanting to hang around the hotel bar longer than you should when you could be exploring the city. But then again, after a day of walking around Roman cobblestones, that’s not exactly a bad problem to have.

Beautiful, clean, spacious rooms. Perfect location, amazing staff that were soooo helpful! Breakfast was also sooo good and such a big selection. Staff helped us with colosseum tickets, restaurant reservations and everything in between and we can’t recommend this hotel enough.

The service! We arrived on Valentines days and there was a free of charge bottle of Prosecco and chocolates in the room. Then we had a rough night when guests moved in the middle of the night to the connecting room next door, we could hear everything… Night shift upgraded us to a Suite and told us to transfer the luggage the next morning. Then on the last day, without anyone requesting it, I received a birthday cupcake for breakfast. Someone must be keeping a tab on the passport birthdates. Very nice touch. We even forgot to pay for mini bar charge and it was on the house. This was a very good hotel experience.

The staff was so friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to provide us with helpful information. The location of the hotel is excellent. A short walk to Spanish steps and in the middle of shopping but on a quiet street.
