Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about The Britannia Hotel? It’s actually got character – and I mean that in the best way possible. Walking up to the entrance on Via Napoli, you’re right in the thick of things near Termini Station (which honestly sounds sketchy but isn’t really), and there’s this lovely buzz of actual Roman life happening around you. The building itself has that classic European hotel feel – not fancy-schmancy, but solid and welcoming. I was half-expecting another cookie-cutter place, but the lobby surprised me with its warm lighting and marble floors that looked like they’d been there for decades in a good way.

The location is honestly perfect if you’re planning to explore Rome properly. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the main train station, which means easy airport connections and day trips to Florence or Naples if you’re feeling ambitious. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize – Via Napoli puts you right between the Baths of Caracalla and the Colosseum, so you can actually walk to the major sites instead of dealing with the metro crowds. The street itself is pretty quiet at night (I was worried about train noise, but it’s really not an issue), and there’s this little family-run trattoria called Da Valentino just around the corner that serves the kind of carbonara that makes you understand why Romans get so particular about their pasta.

What really won me over was the staff – they actually seem to enjoy their jobs, which is rarer than you’d think. The front desk guy, Marco, gave me genuinely useful tips about avoiding tourist traps and pointed me toward the local markets. The rooms are clean and comfortable without being flashy – good AC (crucial in summer), decent wifi, and bathrooms that work properly. I mean, the decor won’t win any design awards, but everything feels well-maintained and thoughtful. The breakfast situation is solid too – proper espresso, fresh pastries, and they don’t try to pass off industrial croissants as Italian baking. You’ll probably want to grab lunch at one of the nearby spots anyway because, well, you’re in Rome, but it’s nice to start the day without hunting for decent coffee. The 8.5 rating makes sense to me – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in the city, but it delivers on what actually matters when you’re using your hotel as a base for exploring rather than a destination itself.

Reviews

  • Good location decent value – Daniel from United States – 22 June 2025 (8/10)

    Very friendly and helpful staff

What could be improved: Small rooms and elevator

  • This was our second visit to the Britannia and will always be our first choice for a hotel in Rome! – Jane from Canada – 21 June 2025 (10/10)

There was a lot of selection for breakfast, particularly nice pastries.

We really enjoyed the complimentary tour at night to see the Pantheon and other sights along the way, through a sister hotel. Virgillio earned a degree in art from the University of Rome 30 years ago and really knew his stuff. He was very enthusiastic and had us laughing as we ran through the streets in the rain. It was a highlight of our trip Thank you Virgillio!

What could be improved: Nothing. It was perfect. The location could not have been better.

  • Well presented rooms and fantastic staff! – Julie from Australia – 31 May 2025 (7/10)

It was clean, well presented, great breakfast and staff were very friendly and helpful. Got a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine which was a nice surprise.

What could be improved: The rooms were small, with 2 large suitcases it was hard to navigate in the room.

  • Exceptional – Lydia from United States – 29 May 2025 (10/10)

Friendly staff, very helpful. Nice room, very comfortable and good breakfast.

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Very friendly and good quality hotel. Good location. – Malcolm from United Kingdom – 27 May 2025 (8/10)

Breakfast and service were very good. Location was good. Bed was very comfortable and good pillows. Staff on reception were exceptionally helpful.

What could be improved: Size of room – too small. We also had evening meal at rooftop restaurant at sister hotel. Quality of staff was very poor – need training – and over priced- contrasted markedly with the staff at Britannia.

  • Cozy stay not far from Train Station – Krystyna from Poland – 27 May 2025 (10/10)

We got an upgrade, greeted by lovely hostesses who made our stay easy, comfortable and very pleasant. Room was nice, all our requests taken into consideration, location is convenient for early morning connections via train station. Would not mind coming back.

What could be improved: It would be nice to have few bottles of free drinkable water and not the ones that were for additional price in mini bar.

  • Beutiful British style hotel in the center of Rome – Valerijs from Switzerland – 26 May 2025 (9/10)

Location is very convenient. Staff extremely pleasant and helpful. Nice design.

  • Roma close to all sights. – Vicky from United States – 25 May 2025 (9/10)

    Such a quaint historical hotel.

The daily included tours were amazing.

What could be improved: Stairs going into but they helped with our bags.

  • Nice stay in Rome – Misterbee from United Kingdom – 18 May 2025 (8/10)

Nice location & hotel, things were clean and tidy. The breakfast was decent. My room was quite spacious for the size but I did miss having some natural light coming into the room. It's very close to the train station and you can get to places easily by foot. The staff were exceptional, super friendly and helpful. They provided great advice for my stay and even for onward travel around italy.

  • Very good – Felma from Canada – 16 May 2025 (9/10)

Location was great. Walking distance to the Metro (train).
Staff were very hospitable and helpful.

    What could be improved: None
