Hotel Description

You know what really got me about RioneMonti16? It’s tucked away on this narrow cobblestone street that most tourists completely miss, even though you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Colosseum. I mean, Via de’ Ciancaleoni isn’t exactly a main drag – it’s one of those winding Roman streets where you actually hear your footsteps echoing off the medieval walls at night. The building itself feels like someone’s stylish Roman apartment that just happens to rent rooms, which honestly makes sense given how boutique hotels work in this neighborhood.

The Monti area is sort of Rome’s best-kept secret, and staying here puts you right in the thick of it without the chaos of the tourist center. You’ll walk past little wine bars where locals actually hang out (not just overpriced tourist traps), and there’s this fantastic morning market on Via del Boschetto that most guidebooks don’t even mention. The hotel picks up on that same vibe – it’s polished enough to earn its four stars, but there’s something authentically Roman about the whole experience. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, no fuss, and the staff actually knew the neighborhood well enough to point me toward a tiny trattoria around the corner that served the best cacio e pepe I had in Rome.

What really works here is how they’ve managed to soundproof the rooms despite being in a centuries-old building – Roman streets can get pretty lively, especially on weekend nights when everyone’s spilling out of the bars. The rooms themselves feel more like staying in a friend’s well-appointed apartment than a typical hotel, with these lovely touches like local ceramics and what I’m pretty sure were actual antiques mixed in with modern amenities. Honestly, the whole place strikes that perfect balance between comfort and character that’s surprisingly hard to find in Rome. You’re close enough to walk to all the major sites (the Roman Forum is basically around the corner), but far enough from the cruise ship crowds that you can actually enjoy your morning coffee without dodging selfie sticks. Plus, and this matters more than you’d think, the street is just wide enough that you don’t feel claustrophobic but narrow enough that it stays quiet during the day.

Reviews

  • Great apartment in a great area – Marion from Australia – 28 June 2025 (8/10)

Great location. Lots of great eating and drinking places nearby.

What could be improved: Bed was too soft for my liking but otherwise ok.

  • Superb – Katharina from Austria – 9 June 2025 (9/10)

We loved it. Very pretty and big apartment. The location is extremely good.
Has air conditioning, which really helped with the heat

What could be improved: The steps are very steep, not suitable for people with walking issues. We didn't mind, but other people may.

  • Lovely Central Apartment – Andrew from United Kingdom – 20 August 2024 (9/10)

Great central location in a lovely neighbourhood with great shops, restaurants and bars. Aircon was a godsend during the middle of August heat.

What could be improved: No door to upstairs bedroom and limited drawers/wardrobe upstairs. Beds were comfortable though a little soft for our tastes.

  • Exceptional – Ebony from Australia – 29 July 2024 (10/10)

Pauline was lovely and was really knowledgeable about the area we were staying. Gave us some good recommendations on where to eat aswell as the history behind the room. Central spot and room was full of everything you’d need whilst travelling.

  • Superb – Efim from United States – 24 July 2024 (9/10)

    Creat location

What could be improved: Not enough hot water

  • Good – Chauhan from India – 23 March 2024 (7/10)

Overall apartment is nice and facilities are really good.

What could be improved: Behaviour of the staff was not nice with me.

  • Great just, great location lovely old building. – Emma from United Kingdom – 22 March 2024 (10/10)

What could be improved: Needs new pillows but otherwise was fine.

  • Great location in an original building, well worth the stay. – John from Australia – 8 September 2023 (9/10)

Great location and wonderful original building, very friendly staff

    What could be improved: Stairs

  • Pauline was wonderful. Our plane was delayed and she stayed late to hand us the keys and make sure we were settled. We h – R from United States – 2 August 2023 (9/10)

The fantastic neighborhood and convenient location to everywhere in the city.
Comfortable place for our family to come home to in the afternoon with a little bit of space for the kids to play and relax after sightseeing during the day.
Having three full bathrooms was fantastic.
Having three floors gave everyone their own space and some privacy. We had my in-laws on the ground floor room, our kids on the pullout couch, and my wife and I stayed in the 3rd floor room.
    Having the kitchenette was great.

What could be improved: Steep stairs in the house – fine for younger folks but somewhat difficult for my elderly in-laws.
One end of the lane that the house sits on ends in stairs, as seen in the photos, which was also challenging for my elderly in-laws. Definitely instruct a cab driver to drop you off at BlackMarket Hall so that you come from the “flat side” of the road and don’t need to take luggage up the stairs.
Air-conditioning in the top floor room wasn’t able to fully cool the room.
Hot water in shower had trouble keeping up with numerous showers.
