Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Relais Giulia? It’s tucked into this Renaissance palace on Via Giulia – and I mean actually tucked in, not just marketing speak. The street itself is this gorgeous cobblestone stretch that most tourists rush past on their way to the Pantheon, but honestly, it’s one of Rome’s most elegant addresses. Locals will tell you Via Giulia was designed by Bramante himself, and walking it early morning with your espresso feels like you’ve got the whole city to yourself.

The hotel itself sits in what used to be a cardinal’s residence (because of course it did – this is Rome), and they’ve kept that intimate, residential feel rather than going full corporate hotel. I mean, we’re talking 19 rooms total, so it’s more like staying at your incredibly well-connected Roman friend’s place. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, which sounds small but makes a huge difference when you’re jet-lagged and trying to figure out whether that dinner reservation is at 7 or 8. The rooms have this perfect balance of old-world charm and modern comfort – exposed beams and marble bathrooms, but also proper air conditioning and WiFi that actually works. Fair warning though: if you’re used to massive American hotel rooms, these feel more European-sized, but honestly the location more than makes up for it.

Speaking of location – you’re literally a five-minute walk from Campo de’ Fiori (perfect for morning market runs), and the Pantheon is so close you’ll probably pass it twice a day without thinking about it. But here’s the thing nobody tells you: Via Giulia stays remarkably quiet, even during high season. Something about the way the buildings are positioned just seems to muffle the typical Roman street noise. I actually slept better here than at hotels twice the price in more “prestigious” areas. The only real downside is parking – forget about it unless you enjoy expensive Italian parking garages, but honestly, once you’re here you won’t want to drive anywhere anyway. The Navona area is incredibly walkable, and there’s a bus stop right around the corner if you need to venture further out. Pro tip: ask the front desk about their restaurant recommendations. They steered me toward this tiny family place on Via del Governo Vecchio that I never would have found otherwise, and it ended up being one of those perfect Roman meals you’ll remember forever.

Very friendly. I would highly recommend this property. Location was fabulous- all the hip areas within walking distance. The location in Old Rome was excellent. It was so convenient to walk through charming neighborhoods. The decor was tasteful, and it had a lovely little breakfast room with substantial fare. Best of all was the extremely gracious host, who let us leave luggage, check in early and settle in to the breakfast room midday before our room was open so that we could have a quiet place to work.

What could be improved: Nothing! It was perfect!

I chose Relais Giulia based on location, which was superb for what our itinerary was. We enjoyed a complimentary upgrade to a suite which was just beyond any expectation we had. It was beautiful, spacious, clean and comfortable. We took breakfast one morning and it was very good. This is a beautiful property with a very friendly and helpful staff. We would return and would highly recommend this to anyone looking to stay near the river and within walking distance to the Vatican.

What could be improved: We loved everything!
