Hotel Description

You know what? I’ve walked past Relais del Portico probably dozens of times before I actually noticed it tucked away on Via della Reginella. It’s one of those places that doesn’t scream for attention – honestly, you could miss it if you’re rushing toward the Pantheon like most tourists do. But that’s actually part of its charm.

The location is pretty incredible once you realize what you’ve got around you. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the Pantheon, which means you’ll hear the buzz of the crowds during the day, but here’s the thing – this little side street gets surprisingly quiet once evening hits. The building itself has that worn Roman elegance you see everywhere in the historic center, with shuttered windows and that honey-colored stone that looks different depending on the light. Inside, they’ve done a decent job keeping some of the old-world feel without making it feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The rooms aren’t huge (I mean, this is central Rome, what do you expect?), but they’re thoughtfully put together with nice touches like good lighting and actual closet space.

What I really appreciate is how the staff actually knows the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to Trastevere for dinner, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward the obvious route – he told me about cutting through the little streets behind Sant’Andrea della Valle to avoid the crowds around Campo de’ Fiori. That kind of local knowledge makes a difference. The breakfast situation is solid too, nothing fancy but proper coffee and decent pastries, plus you can eat it in this little courtyard area that feels like a secret garden in the middle of the city chaos.

Look, it’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi can be spotty on the upper floors, and if you’re here in August, the air conditioning works harder than it probably should. But there’s something to be said for staying somewhere that feels like it belongs in the neighborhood rather than just being dropped into it. The 8.1 rating feels about right to me – it’s genuinely good without being flashy about it. You’re paying for the location and the experience of being in the heart of ancient Rome, where you can stumble out your door and find yourself standing in front of a 2,000-year-old building before you’ve even had your morning coffee. If that’s what you’re after, and you don’t need a rooftop pool or a marble lobby, this place delivers exactly what it promises.

Reviews

  • Comfortable stay in beautiful Rome – Olga from United Kingdom – 25 April 2025 (9/10)

Spacious room, additional sofa-bed, nice bathroom, small fridge, comfortable bed, nice views fr windows, nearby tratoria- cafe for breakfast/lunch within fountain view, walking distance to main city sites, 40 euro taxi tariff from Ciampino airport to old city centre. Friendly staff.

What could be improved: Narrow staircase would not be suitable for people with disabilities.

  • Clean, minimal, comfortable – Taras from Sweden – 19 February 2025 (9/10)

Perfect location for rest between activities, didn't had to use public transport once!

Great cafees nearby, can even hear street performers sometimes

What could be improved: It takes a long time for boiler to start heating water and it doesn't get as hot as I like to.

Stuffy air in the shared hallway due to lack of windows.

  • Superb – Gitti from Belgium – 31 January 2025 (9/10)

great location. swift and friendly communication with host

  • Superb – Ruben from United Kingdom – 5 November 2024 (9/10)

Very clean and swish room with bathroom in the Jewish district in Rome. Comfortable, windows block out noise, central location within walking distance of sites like pantheon, Trevi fountain and piazza navona.

  • Comfortable and the host was quick to respond. – Mali from Canada – 27 October 2024 (9/10)

Very comfortable bed, AC and windows worked as expected, bathroom was clean, and the room was spacious enough for a solo traveler. It was a great room to get afternoon naps in after doing all the touristy things early morning. Location wise, it was between the Vatican and Colosseum, which is perfect, since those are the 2 biggest attractions in Rome. Also, the host was very helpful when it came to managing neighbors' noises at night time, they responded very quickly.

What could be improved: The price was high, but I think it's market appropriate for Rome. I realized afterwards how popular Rome as a tourist spot was. Also, I wish there was a "do not disturb" sign for the door.

  • Location and a bit of luxury – Claire from Australia – 19 October 2024 (9/10)

Location is perfect for main sites while also offering a touch of intimacy with proximity to the turtle fountain and Jewish quarter.
    Bathroom was amazing!!!
    Main bedroom roomy and comfortable.

What could be improved: Minor issues only.
Enough coffee pods and milk for use but hey, "when in Rome".
Tea making facilities would be great.
Stairs might challenge some or those with mobility issues.

  • Excellent property with great food places near by – John from Australia – 15 October 2024 (8/10)

    Great location

What could be improved: Very steep stairs at entrance

  • Superb – Stoyan from Bulgaria – 7 October 2024 (9/10)

Cozy and modernly furnished room. The location of the is very good – in the center of Rome, within walking distance of almost all sights.

What could be improved: The only thing I didn't like was that the towels were a bit dirty.

  • Very good – Jennaya from Australia – 26 September 2024 (8/10)

The room was clean and very comfortable.
The location is fantastic, with lots of cafes and bars around, as well as a few little shops. The owners were very open with communication and gave us clear check in details. Ruben checked in on us in person one morning and we had a lovely chat. He recommended a good coffee place and also helped us plan our drive to our next destination.

What could be improved: The stairs would be an issue for anyone with mobility issues, but didn't bother us.

  • Cute guesthouse in excellent convenient location – Allison from Canada – 8 August 2024 (9/10)

Great location, within easy walking distance of all of the major attractions.

What could be improved: Stairs were very narrow and steep. Fine for us but might not be manageable for some guests.
