So I stumbled across this little gem tucked away on Via Tomacelli, and honestly? It’s one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve got a secret. The “New! Spanish Step Design Apartment” might have a slightly awkward name, but don’t let that throw you off – this 3-star spot is actually pretty solid for what it is.

First thing that hits you is the location. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Spanish Steps, which sounds touristy until you realize what that actually means for your Rome experience. You can grab your morning espresso from the little bar on the corner (the owner, Mario, makes the best cornetti in the neighborhood), wander up to Trinità dei Monti before the crowds hit, then duck back to your place when your feet start screaming. Via Tomacelli itself is surprisingly quiet for being so central – it’s one of those narrow Roman streets where the buildings kind of hug each other and muffle most of the chaos. Though I’ll be honest, if you’re a super light sleeper, the occasional Vespa at 2 AM might wake you up. That’s just Rome being Rome.

The apartment itself feels fresh – hence the “New!” in the name, I guess – with that clean, minimalist design that actually works really well in a city where everything else is ancient and ornate. The kitchen is small but functional (you can definitely make pasta if you’re trying to save some euros), and the shower has proper water pressure, which you’d be surprised how rare that is in old Roman buildings. What I really appreciated was the air conditioning that actually works – crucial if you’re visiting between June and September when Rome turns into a sweaty, beautiful oven. The 7.8 rating makes sense to me; it’s not luxury, but it’s comfortable and the details are thought out. Little things like USB outlets by the bed and decent Wi-Fi that doesn’t cut out every ten minutes.

You know what really sold me on this place though? The proximity to everything without feeling like you’re trapped in tourist central. Sure, the Spanish Steps are right there, but you’re also a quick walk to Via del Corso for shopping, or you can head toward the Pantheon area for dinner. There’s this fantastic little enoteca called Il Sorpasso just around the corner where locals actually drink – not the kind of place that charges you 15 euros for a basic aperitivo. And if you need groceries, there’s a small Carrefour about five minutes away, though the produce isn’t amazing. For that, hit the market at Campo de’ Fiori in the morning.

The whole experience feels less like staying in a hotel and more like borrowing a friend’s apartment – which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to live like a Roman for a few days instead of just checking off monuments. Just remember to book directly if you can; sometimes the third-party sites don’t communicate well with the property about check-in details, and standing on a Roman street with your luggage while trying to figure out who has your keys isn’t exactly the vacation vibe you’re going for.

  What could be improved: Da limpeza. No geral, a casa estava limpa,as notámos que a roupa de cama tinha algumas marcas e em algumas zonas da casa havia muito pó, como de baixo das camas e nas prateleiras das mesas de cabeceira.

  La posizione dell'appartamento è ottima, centralissima e comoda a piedi a tutti i principali luoghi di interesse di Roma, prezzo assolutamente vantaggioso. Zona molto tranquilla e sicura.
