Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Monti Garden? The name actually makes sense – there’s this lovely little courtyard garden that you glimpse as you walk up to the entrance, and it immediately makes you forget you’re in the middle of Rome. Well, not exactly the middle, but you’re definitely in one of the best neighborhoods to stay in if you want to feel like a local rather than just another tourist tramping around the Colosseum.

The location on Via di San Martino ai Monti is honestly perfect if you know Rome at all. You’re in Monti, which is sort of like Rome’s version of a village within the city – narrow cobblestone streets, tiny wine bars tucked into corners, and locals who actually live here rather than just work in the tourist areas. I mean, you can walk to the Colosseum in about ten minutes if you want (and you probably do at least once), but you’re also a two-minute stroll from places like Il Sorpasso for aperitivo or that little bookshop Bibli that locals actually browse through on Sunday mornings. The Metro’s close enough at Cavour station, but honestly, you’ll probably end up walking everywhere because the streets are just too charming to skip.

What I really appreciated was how the hotel feels deliberately calm – the rooms have this sort of understated elegance that doesn’t scream “look how boutique we are!” The staff actually remembers your name after the first day, which sounds small but makes a difference when you’re trying to figure out whether that restaurant around the corner is worth the wait (it usually is, by the way). The breakfast situation is solid – nothing fancy, but proper Italian coffee and pastries that aren’t tourist-grade. I stayed during shoulder season in October and the place had this perfect energy level – busy enough to feel alive but not so packed that you’re fighting for a table. Parking’s tricky, like everywhere in Rome, but they’ll help you figure it out if you’re brave enough to drive here. The rooms on the street side get some noise in the evenings – it’s not traffic, more like the pleasant buzz of people heading out for dinner and drinks – but if you’re a light sleeper, just ask for something facing the courtyard when you book. The whole place has this feeling of being run by people who actually care about hospitality rather than just going through the motions, and after a few days of wandering around Rome’s more tourist-heavy spots, coming back to Monti Garden feels like returning to your own little corner of the city.

Reviews

  • It was ok for a short stay but definitely not returning . – Wendy from United Kingdom – 9 May 2025 (7/10)

Very friendly, staff who served us well at breakfast and serviced our room. Clean comfy beds with good old fashioned blankets . Change of towels was very welcome.
Walkable to The Colosseum area . Close to main railway station and a metro line.

What could be improved: The breakfast. Well prepared but very heavy.
The room was small, even though it was the triple room for 2 of us.
Only one curtain which didn’t cover the window.
Sliding door to en-suite not quite wide enough.
The reception for Monti Garden was virtually non existent. We had to collect our keys from the restaurant opposite, which was easy but there was no proper welcome.
Property run down and definitely could do with an upgrade.

  • Couldn’t have asked for better hosts and a better place to stay for our 3 nights in Rome – Bronagh from United Kingdom – 5 April 2025 (10/10)

Absolutely wonderful staff, very kind and welcoming. Breakfast was 10/10 lots of options, my boyfriend unfortunately was ill the first morning and they allowed me to take a plate of breakfast upstairs to the room for him to have in bed. Wonderful location had everything we needed. Mini fridge full of options for a cheap price. They supplied everything we needed and was always around when we had questions needed. The only minor thing was the shower pressure was slightly poor but apart from that would highly recommend to anyone wanting to stay in the heart of Rome looking for a true comforting experience.

  • Exceptional – Perperidou from Cyprus – 11 March 2025 (10/10)

    Perfect central location
    Amazing staff !
    Thank you for everything ❤️

  • I recommend – Radka from Bulgaria – 3 November 2024 (10/10)

The hosts are very kind and responsive. They organized a transfer for us from and to the airport – fast and comfortable. Every day the room was cleaned. Excellent location for sightseeing on foot. I recommend!

  • Great location Friendly staff Comfortable bed – Deborah from Australia – 11 October 2024 (7/10)

Lovely staff. Wonderful location. Very good breakfast.

What could be improved: Didn’t replace tea bags for second day/night. I got some from the restaurant opposite. No lift and lots of stairs which was difficult for solo elderly woman to get luggage up and down. Perhaps I didn’t notice when booking! Not enough room to open suitcase apart from on the bed. Next time I’ll book a bigger room!

  • great – Jack from United States – 9 October 2024 (9/10)

    cozy

    What could be improved: nothing

  • Superb – Peggy from United States – 25 September 2024 (9/10)

The room was nice and the staff were excellent. So friendly.

What could be improved: The breakfast garden was beautiful.

  • Very good – Aimee from United Kingdom – 19 September 2024 (8/10)

Good location- 5 minute walk to the nearest metro, reasonably priced, comfortable beds, fully stocked mini bar, air con included, friendly staff.

What could be improved: Breakfast was a set menu provided with very limited options.
Wasn’t the easiest to find, no obvious signs.

  • Great location, lovely staff, comfortable and clean..would recommend! – Pitt from United Kingdom – 18 September 2024 (10/10)

Great location close to Termini station and close to the Colosseum. We only had to use public transport to get to the airport and otherwise walked everywhere. Great to be able to check in as soon as we arrived from the airport and the option to leave bags after checking out if necessary. Comfortable room and good shower. Also really nice to be able to access the garden to sit and relax for a bit.

What could be improved: As a vegan I couldn't appreciate the breakfast as much as non-vegans. I had toast and orange juice and coffee. It looked like a great breakfast for people that eat everything with a mixture of sweet and savoury and the staff were lovely. Coffee and juice refills were offered.

  • Great pace to stay for Rome exploring – Xiaolei from United Kingdom – 3 September 2024 (8/10)

Close to the train station (10min walk), walkable distance to a few attractions. Quiet room and lovely breakfast in a nice garden.

What could be improved: Room is a bit small for 3 people, but good value for the money
