Hotel Description
Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of Rome apartments over the years, and Mastai Trastevere Home actually gets it right in ways that surprised me. The moment you step off Via della Luce – and honestly, you’ll probably walk past it the first time because the entrance is more understated than you’d expect – you realize this isn’t your typical tourist rental. The building has that lived-in Roman character where the stone stairs are worn smooth from centuries of footsteps, but someone clearly put thought into making the apartments feel contemporary without losing that authentic vibe.
What really struck me is how they’ve managed to capture the best of Trastevere living without the usual compromises. You know how some places in this neighborhood can be either charming but falling apart, or modern but soulless? This place threads that needle perfectly. The rooms have these beautiful high ceilings and original details – I mean, you can actually feel the history in the walls – but the Wi-Fi works, the shower has proper water pressure, and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a dying helicopter. The 8.8 rating makes sense once you’re there; it’s those small things that add up, like having enough electrical outlets (revolutionary for Rome) and windows that actually keep the street noise to a reasonable level.
The location is probably the real win here, though. Via della Luce puts you right in the heart of Trastevere, but on one of the quieter streets that doesn’t turn into a complete circus every night. You’re maybe two minutes from Piazza Santa Maria, where all the action is, but you can actually sleep without earplugs. During the day, you’ve got that perfect Roman rhythm – locals doing their shopping at the morning markets, kids playing in the small piazzas, elderly residents setting up their chairs outside to watch the world go by. The evening scene is lively without being overwhelming, and if you want to escape the tourist crowds, you can duck into one of the family-run trattorias on the side streets where they’ll remember your name after two visits. I particularly love how you can walk to the Vatican in about fifteen minutes, but you’re also close enough to cross the river and be in the centro storico whenever you want. The 4-star rating feels honest – it’s not trying to be luxury, but it’s thoughtfully done with genuine attention to what travelers actually need.

Superb – Colleen from United States – 14 April 2025 (9/10)
Very clean property! All appeared to be new!
What could be improved: No hooks in the bathrooms for your towels/ clothes/ cosmetic bags. Was provided with minimal towels (only one kitchen towel). Only two coffee pods provided. The point of booking an apartment or airbnb style location is to have more amenities then a hotel, not less. At minimum a hotel provides plenty of towels, a few waters, tea and coffee. It could definitely use better storage locations for open up your suitcase in the rooms. We had a wonderful time together with my parents to mark my mother’s 70th Birthday. Would definitely come back again. – Yuliya from United Kingdom – 27 November 2024 (10/10)
We love the space, the two showers. The apartment was clean , had everything we needed, including some snacks, coffee. The living room is grand , we enjoyed watching TV on the big sofa after the day of walking around Rome. The location is convenient, we walked to Colosseum and Roman Forum. My parents really loved their room with single beds and separate shower. The staff was welcoming, they were meeting us in the apartment to handover the key. They were very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed the place very much and will consider this accommodation for the future trips to Rome.
What could be improved: Could benefit of having a hair dryer, but not essential.Disappointing – Paula from Australia – 28 September 2024 (4/10)
The space was large with new IKEA furniture. Microwave would have been beneficial.
What could be improved: BEWARE The host was 15 minutes late meeting us with zero communication, despite my confirming the arrival time. Sounds like this is a company, not an individual host. They were completely unresponsive to calls or messages the entire stay, which was extremely stressful with a disabled parent and toddler. Almost zero light in the lobby. Rooms were not set-up with towels, beds were not made, and they had to come in and do it later. Were not provided sufficient towels for the number of people booked. No basic amenities like soap or toilet machine. There was a coffee machine but with no coffee. Wifi didn't work in half of the apartment. Were not given any instructions on how to take out trash. AC was very weak, luckily it wasn't the middle of summer for us. Floor was dirty and didn't feel like it had been mopped, felt grainy.Apartment is clean and big. Be prapered to ke out our trash bags and carry it with your luggage. – Arunas from Lithuania – 7 October 2024 (4/10)
Host met us at the property. Was quick and easy.
What could be improved: In other properties in Rome late check in charge starts at 21:00. It this property late chek in is from 20:00.Bel appartement – Eugènie from France – 22 May 2025 (9/10)
Bel appartement, spacieux avec tout le nécessaire. L’emplacement top, au calme et tout est à proximité ( les restos, les boutiques pour goûter les spécialités locales, les lieux touristiques).
Exceptional – Raif from Ecuador – 19 May 2025 (10/10)
Apartamento amplio, recientemente reformado, como las fotos. La recepción de Alessandro fue A1. Nos gustó mucho el lugar y la localización
What could be improved: Nada.Apartamento muy cómodo en trastevere – Marta from Spain – 30 March 2025 (10/10)
Muy cómodo y bien ubicado
Superb – Sine from Denmark – 26 November 2024 (9/10)
Twee badkamers
What could be improved: Geen gordijnen ivm akoestiek.Estupendo apartamento en el Trastevere – Raul from Spain – 23 October 2024 (9/10)
Ubicación
What could be improved: El sofá cama era incómodo.
