Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about Il Romitello? The name sounds like some romantic countryside retreat, but it’s actually tucked into this quiet residential stretch of Via Vincenzo Viara De Ricci – honestly, I had to double-check the address when my taxi dropped me off. The building itself has that classic Roman apartment block vibe, nothing fancy from the outside, but that’s sort of what I ended up loving about it. You’re staying where actual Romans live, not in some tourist bubble.
The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re experiencing real Rome without sacrificing convenience. I mean, you’re about fifteen minutes from the Vatican by metro (Ottaviano stop is your friend), but when you walk out the door, you’ve got local bars where the barista actually remembers your coffee order by day three, and there’s this little alimentari around the corner that stays open late – saved me more than once when I needed water or forgot to grab snacks. The neighborhood gets genuinely quiet after 9 PM, which was amazing after spending days dodging crowds at the Colosseum. No tourist groups marching past your window at dawn, just the occasional Vespa and morning coffee chatter drifting up from the street.
The hotel itself feels like staying at your Italian aunt’s place – if your aunt had decent Wi-Fi and actually changed the towels regularly. The rooms are clean and bigger than you’d expect for a 3-star in Rome, though don’t expect Instagram-worthy marble bathrooms or anything. What I really appreciated was how the staff genuinely seemed to care about helping you figure out the city. The guy at reception (Marco, I think?) drew me an actual hand-sketched map to avoid the tourist traps near St. Peter’s and pointed me toward this incredible supplì place that I never would’ve found otherwise. The breakfast is Continental standard – decent coffee, fresh cornetti, the usual suspects – but they’ve got real jam, not those weird packets, and the cappuccino machine actually works. I’ve stayed at pricier places in Rome where that wasn’t guaranteed. Is it going to blow your mind? Probably not. But will you wake up feeling rested, grab a proper coffee, and head out to explore without your wallet crying? Absolutely. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Reviews
Is ok. – Shumi from Finland – 10 June 2025 (8/10)
It’s clean and comfortable. Nice breakfast. Quiet and peaceful area
What could be improved: Poor communication. They answered our message one day late and also the receptionist English skill is almost nonexistent. Is ok if even they answered our message well so we would be ok. With public transport it’s obviously so far from the city centre. It’s a wonderful place to stay when I travelled in Roma. – Kai from Romania – 21 September 2024 (9/10)
The staffs are very friendly. The room is clean.
What could be improved: If there is normal quilt rather than a thin blanket, it would be better.Nice place – Ravikumar from India – 18 September 2024 (8/10)
Paula was very friendly. Safe parking and huge gallery of u need to walk indoors
What could be improved: Coffee vending machineRecommend the accommodation. Very clean, and friendly. – Adrian from Germany – 19 August 2024 (9/10)
For a family trip, everything was superb. The location it was clean, quite, friendly staff.
I would totally recommend this place.
What could be improved: The only negative thing we've experienced it was that the air conditioning system it was literally all the time On, which can be to much. And also, there is no fridge in the room. It could be very helpful, especially in the summer season when is super hot.Would recommend, great value for money – Masha from United Kingdom – 22 April 2024 (9/10)
Friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities, esay to get to the center, good wifi and breakfast.
Acceptable – José from Spain – 18 June 2023 (9/10)
The place was nice and clean
What could be improved: It’s not near the center of the city, and it’s not close to any metro station. Also, the shower had not door, and the bathroom door didn’t work, so it was a messGreat stay, if you're given a modern room. Will still stay there again. – Arist from Malta – 1 February 2025 (7/10)
The location, access, parking and the venue per se… was great. This was the second time I stayed here; first time: the room was great and the bathroom was modern.
What could be improved: The second time, there were some shortcomings: unplugged minibar, old bathroom (drains smelled), TV was (inevitably) hung on the side of the bed, one guest can't see well. But on the whole, great stay. It's been a good experience, I could visit again. – Panagiotis from Greece – 2 October 2024 (8/10)
Closed parking. Big bathroom. Big room. Pleasant staff.
What could be improved: Breakfast was less than minimum.Good place to stay if tou don't mind the distance – Aleksandra from North Macedonia – 7 June 2023 (8/10)
The staff was very kind and helpfull, the facilities are good. They cleaned our room every day and the breakfast was just normal Italian breakfast, sweet pastries and coffee. They let us use the washing machine to was our clothes which costs 2€, and the dryer costs 3€.
There are quite a few places to eat/drink around the hotel (we recommend "Pizza di Francesco") and a big and well supplied supermarket is also nearby.
What could be improved: The hotel is a former catholic convent which has been renovated and although everything was clean you could smell the pipes from the bathroom, which was a bit unpleasent.
The location itself is not very well connected, it is 20min walk to the nearest train station Gemelli. The bus stop is closer at 6 min walk, but there was nowhere to buy daily tickets from in the area.Location not ideal if you are not able-bodied – it was a bit of a walk to the bus stop – Victoria from United Kingdom – 18 June 2023 (7/10)
The breakfast room was lovely and sunny. Good was good, but options limited and nothing very filling was available.
What could be improved: More options!
