Hotel Virgilio Overview
Look, I’ve stayed in my fair share of Roman hotels, and Hotel Virgilio honestly surprised me in the best way possible. It’s tucked right into Via Palermo in Monti – and if you don’t know Monti yet, well, you’re missing out on one of Rome’s most authentic neighborhoods. This isn’t the touristy circus around the Trevi Fountain or Spanish Steps. Instead, you’re about a five-minute walk from the Colosseum (seriously, you can see it from some of the upper floor windows), but you’re staying where actual Romans live and work.
The hotel itself has that solid, unpretentious feel that I actually prefer over those overly polished chain places. The lobby’s got marble floors that echo just enough to remind you you’re in Italy, and the staff – they actually remember your name after the first day, which is rarer than you’d think. My room was clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but everything worked properly. The AC was a godsend during my July visit, and honestly, the shower pressure was better than my apartment back home. You know what really got me though? The breakfast spread. I mean, it’s not going to win any awards, but they had proper espresso (not that bitter hotel machine stuff), fresh cornetti, and the guy making eggs actually asked how I wanted them done. Small things, but they matter when you’re trying to fuel up for a day of walking around ancient ruins.
What really makes this place work is the neighborhood itself. Step outside and you’re on streets that feel lived-in – there’s a fantastic little alimentari two blocks down where the owner speaks about four words of English but somehow always knows exactly what you need. The evening scene around here is perfect too; locals start filling up the wine bars and trattorias around seven, and you can actually get a table without booking weeks ahead. I spent half my evenings just wandering the cobblestone streets with a gelato from that place on Via del Boschetto (five-minute walk, get the pistachio). The metro stop at Cavour is literally around the corner, so you can be at the Vatican or anywhere else in Rome within twenty minutes, but honestly, I found myself wanting to stay in the neighborhood more often than not. Sure, the rooms aren’t huge and the building’s got that slightly creaky charm of old Roman architecture, but that 8.7 rating makes perfect sense once you realize you’re getting authentic Roman life at a price that won’t destroy your budget, with the biggest tourist attractions close enough to walk to before your morning coffee wears off.

Central location in Rome near the main sights and with many restaurants and stores in the vicinity. Large enough room. Minibar with normal prices. Nice staff.
What could be improved: As I was aware before booking it, my room was in an anex not linked to the main hotel building. This anex has an ancient small elevator that requires some steps to use.

Perfect location, quiet for sleeping in the evening and very clean hotel too. Perfect spot to walk to many local attractions. There is a pastry shop on the corner with a wide selection paninis and cakes. Not far down the street is also a place that you can buy coffee from the window on the street. According to my husband and sister, the espresso and latte respectively were very good.
What could be improved: No shelf in the shower for the soap and shampoogreat hotel and location, amazing staff – Tania from Canada – 28 April 2025 (10/10)
location and staff were amazing
What could be improved: the bathroom was a bit tight – having hooks on the walls would be helpful
