Hotel Description

You know what really caught me off guard about Villa San Lorenzo Maria? It’s tucked away on this quiet side street in San Lorenzo – Via Dei Liguri – which honestly feels like stepping into a different Rome altogether. I mean, you’re still close enough to hear the city humming, but there’s something refreshingly neighborhood-y about it that you just don’t get near the Colosseum or Trevi Fountain.

The hotel itself has this understated charm that grows on you. It’s a solid 3-star that doesn’t try to be something it’s not, but the staff actually seem to care about what they’re doing – which, let’s be honest, isn’t always a given in Rome. The building has character without being stuffy, and I loved how the rooms had these little touches that felt personal rather than corporate. The breakfast setup is pretty decent too, nothing fancy but you’ll find proper Italian coffee and pastries that taste like they came from the bakery down the street (because they probably did). What really sold me on the place was the location, though. San Lorenzo is where Roman students and young professionals actually hang out – there’s this energy that’s hard to find in the tourist zones. You’ve got Sapienza University right there, so the whole neighborhood has this vibrant, lived-in feeling with proper restaurants where locals eat and bars that don’t charge you fifteen euros for a spritz. The street itself is pretty quiet at night, which I appreciated after walking around the chaos of central Rome all day.

Getting around is actually easier than you’d think – the Termini station is about a fifteen-minute walk, and there are buses that’ll get you to the major sites without too much fuss. But honestly, some of my favorite moments were just wandering around San Lorenzo itself. There’s this great market on Via dei Volsci, and the whole area has this slightly gritty, authentic vibe that reminds you Rome is a real city where people actually live and work, not just a museum. The hotel sits at an 8.2 rating, which feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it does everything well without any major complaints. If you’re the type who wants to experience Rome beyond the postcard version, this place makes a lot of sense.

  • Superb – Julie from South Africa – 30 June 2025 (9/10)

    Great location and super breakfast

  • Very good – Monika from Croatia – 27 June 2025 (8/10)

In front of the hotel is a garden where you can sit in the shaddow and in front of it is parking for cars.

What could be improved: The towels looked a bit dirty, so we used our own.

  • Very good – Emma from Australia – 19 June 2025 (8/10)

Charming hotel. Staff were fantastic. Room was clean and comfortable.

  • Chic, comfortable and available parking – Joanna from United Kingdom – 8 June 2025 (8/10)

The room decor was very chic and we had our own private balcony. The staff were very helpful and friendly and we were also able to park our car. The colosseum by foot is about a 40min walk away, however the metro is close by.

What could be improved: The area of the property was slightly run down, however the atmosphere within the property boundary made up for this.

  • Very good – Gwen from United States – 4 June 2025 (8/10)

Breakfast satisfying. Coffee good. Location out of the city center so difficult to reach on foot and by bus.

    Sweet hotel, quiet and charming.

  • Well recommend – Iryna from Montenegro – 27 May 2025 (9/10)

Location is great, hidden spot in the middle of Rome

What could be improved: Rooms are bit outdated however the shower is amazing

  • Superb – Matthew from New Zealand – 25 March 2025 (9/10)

Great hotel close-ish to the big-ticket items (Colosseo). Staff at reception were really helpful holding our bags before check-in and after check-out. Good (sweet) breakfast worth the extra cost. Large room at a good price. Grazie!

  • Romantic and cozy stay in a quieter part of Rome – Joan from United States – 22 February 2025 (9/10)

Gorgeous little courtyard, small and unique hotel feel. Lovely breakfast staff

  • Superb – Daniel from United Kingdom – 7 February 2025 (9/10)

    Great value

What could be improved: Location, not the best but for Rome city but good options for transport (team/metro)

Mattress not the most comfortable I have slept on

  • Superb – Justyna from Poland – 6 February 2025 (9/10)

    Good location, clean room
