Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – Hotel Tirreno isn’t going to blow you away with luxury, but there’s something really charming about this little three-star spot tucked into Monti that keeps drawing me back. The location on Via San Martino ai Monti is actually perfect if you know Rome at all – you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Colosseum, but more importantly, you’re right in the heart of what’s become the city’s coolest neighborhood. I mean, step outside and you’ve got Monti’s cobblestone streets with all those tiny wine bars and vintage shops that tourists are still discovering, but locals have been loving for years.

The hotel itself feels authentically Roman in that slightly worn, family-run way that I’ve come to appreciate. Don’t expect marble lobbies or anything fancy – the entrance is pretty modest, and you might walk past it if you’re not paying attention. But the staff actually knows the neighborhood, and I’ve gotten some of my best restaurant recommendations from the front desk (there’s this little trattoria around the corner on Via del Boschetto that they told me about – absolutely worth it). The rooms are clean and functional, though honestly, the walls are a bit thin so you’ll hear some street noise during the day. That said, Monti gets surprisingly quiet at night compared to areas closer to the main tourist drags.

What really sells me on this place is the practical stuff that matters when you’re actually trying to enjoy Rome. You can walk to Termini station in about ten minutes when it’s time to leave, but you’re also close enough to wander over to the Roman Forum before the crowds hit in the morning. The little streets around here have some of the best aperitivo spots in the city – I’m talking about places where Romans actually hang out, not just tourist traps. And honestly, for a 7.4 rating, the value is solid. You’re paying for location and authenticity, not five-star amenities, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want. The neighborhood has this lived-in feel that makes you understand why people fall in love with Rome in the first place.

Reviews

  • Hood hotel for the value, but rooms in need renovation. – Avis from United States – 2 June 2025 (8/10)

    Great location, extremely helpful staff.

What could be improved: The mattresses on the beds were thin, hard, and uncomfortable. One was concave and we asked the housekeeper to flip it. That made it better, but thicker newer mattresses would have improved the stay.

  • Good enough to sleep and be near the touristic area – Juan from Colombia – 8 April 2025 (7/10)

It was very close to the Colosseum and some of the touristic places in the city. The breakfast was basic but good enough and you could take as much as you wanted.

What could be improved: 2 out of the 3 receptionists were rude old mans without will to help or assist and little to no patience at all with the language difference

  • A simple place good to know Rome – Eliana from Brazil – 16 September 2024 (8/10)

Tirreno is a good hotel to spend some days in Rome. It is very near from Colosseo and a short walk from Termini Station. The restaurants in the street where is the Hotel are so good. Other strategic point is the Hotel is nearly between of 2 metro stations of different lines of the Rome Metro – Vittorio Emanuele in line A and Cavour in line B. The breakfast is simple and the rooms too, but we didn’t have any problem with air conditioning, or shower, or in the front desk. Is a good option to a simple stay that provide you a good location for tourism.

  • Very good – Laura from Slovenia – 17 August 2024 (8/10)

Great location, close to the Termini station and Colosseum. Clean room. Staff was very friendly.

What could be improved: The room was very small.

  • Great customer service from all staff – Michael from United Kingdom – 30 July 2024 (8/10)

Great customer service from all staff

    What could be improved: N/a

  • Basic value older accommodations with very friendly staff and convenient location – Deborah from United States – 15 June 2024 (7/10)

Very friendly and helpful staff; easy location to ruins and restaurants; fun neighborhood but also quiet enough

What could be improved: Mattress a bit springy, a/c that would blast only cold (but still helpful on hot days); breakfast buffet was simple and same each day without much variety

  • Great spot in Rome – Sarah from United Kingdom – 29 March 2024 (8/10)

Perfect location close to all the main attractions

    What could be improved: N/A

  • A relaxed, mid century hotel in a fantsstic location – Kathryn from United States – 18 October 2023 (8/10)

I loved the garden and the staff. The pastries and coffee in the morning were great, thank you for making hard boiled eggs! I loved the laid-back atmosphere and it felt like stepping into the hotel was like travelling back in time. It has a great mid century feel. The location is ABSOLUTELY fantastic. Don't expect to relax after a long day with some mindless television, the TV in my room was about the size of my laptop, which, in it's own way, is totally perfect. Sit in the garden, go to the bar on the corner and just immerse yourself in Rome.

What could be improved: A luggage rack or two would have been nice. The curtains in my room didn't seem to work. The carpet in the hallway looked very old and could be replaced without losing the mid century feel.

  • Very good – Alb&bee from Australia – 23 June 2023 (8/10)

Location was excellent. Staff were unbelievably helpful. The breakfast options were quite varied.

What could be improved: Room was a bit tight.

  • basic amenities but we spent all day discovering Rome it was a base and that all we needed . – Sheila from United Kingdom – 29 May 2023 (7/10)

    in good location. rustic charm.
    had everything we needed.
    very clean.
