Hotel Description

I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Hotel The Building on Via Montebello, I wasn’t expecting much from the name alone. I mean, “The Building”? But you know what, sometimes the most straightforward places surprise you, and this one actually grew on me during my stay.

The location is what really makes this place work. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Termini Station, which sounds terrible until you realize how incredibly useful it is. I could dump my bags and be on a train to Florence within minutes, or hop the metro to anywhere in the city without that whole dragging-luggage-across-cobblestones nightmare. Plus – and this is something most people don’t think about – the area around Termini has gotten way better over the past few years. There’s this great little Ethiopian place just around the corner on Via Principe Amedeo that I stumbled into after a long day at the Vatican, and honestly, it beat half the tourist traps near the Pantheon.

The hotel itself feels like they took a traditional Roman building and gave it a thoughtful update without going overboard. The lobby’s got this nice marble-and-wood thing happening, nothing flashy but solid. My room was on the fourth floor (there’s an elevator, thank god), and while it wasn’t huge, it had everything I needed – good shower pressure, which is genuinely hit-or-miss in Rome, and windows that actually kept out the street noise. Speaking of noise, mornings can get a bit lively with the traffic and people heading to the station, but it quiets down by evening. The air conditioning worked properly too, which was clutch during that heat wave in July.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. The guy at the front desk – Marco, I think? – gave me these spot-on restaurant recommendations that weren’t just the obvious choices. He sent me to this family-run trattoria near San Lorenzo that I never would’ve found otherwise, where the carbonara was absolutely perfect and cost half what I’d pay near the Colosseum. That kind of local knowledge makes a difference, you know?

The breakfast situation is decent – not spectacular, but they do proper espresso and have fresh cornetti, which is really all you need before heading out to explore. I actually preferred grabbing coffee at the little bar across the street some mornings because, well, when in Rome, but it’s nice to have the option upstairs when you’re running late.

Look, this isn’t going to be the most Instagram-worthy hotel you’ll ever stay at, and the 7.8 rating feels about right – it’s solidly good without being exceptional. But if you want a comfortable base that’s genuinely well-connected to everything, with staff who know what they’re doing and a neighborhood that feels more authentic than touristy, Hotel The Building does the job really well. I’d definitely stay here again, especially if I was planning day trips outside the city or needed easy airport access.

Reviews

  • Superb – Sarah from United Kingdom – 27 June 2025 (9/10)

The beds were comfortable, rooms had lovely showers and it is in a great location. Really nice to have the outside area to relax in after a day of sightseeing. I found the staff very helpful.

What could be improved: The plugs had issues in my room, no kettle.

  • Very good – O'dwyer from United Kingdom – 26 June 2025 (8/10)

Nice hotel, the bar was good to relax in after a busy day exploring. It would be nice to tone the lighting down in the bar to support the ambience of the piano player.
Was a 10 minute walk from main Termini Station.

  • Luxury stay with family-friendly pool-deck and amazing breakfast in a great Roma location. – Jessica from United States – 17 June 2025 (9/10)

The hotel is beautiful and had a fun pool deck that my family loved using in the hot weather. Good location in a very busy part of Roma – walking distance to plenty of landmarks and great restaurants. The hotels' morning breakfast was a delicious spread with tons of variety, coffee service and mimosas. We spent a few hours in the hotels' spa which was peaceful and clean and actually got busy. Two hours visiting the spa is probably a sufficient amount of time and was a fun way to relax a little bit. Our room was fun with a rooftop deck that had an amazing view of beautiful, busy Roma.

What could be improved: Pool-side food and beverage service would have been a plus. Instead of having to walk in and out of the hotels' grand lobby for any meals or drinks while on the deck. Not a big deal – the servers were really polite and accommodating.

  • Great facilities around hotel eg pub, and cafe – Shayne from Australia – 10 June 2025 (9/10)

    location

  • Lovely staff, beautiful building and relaxing pool area – Jessica from United Kingdom – 6 June 2025 (8/10)

Beautiful building, nothing too much trouble for the staff. Lovely relaxing terrace and pool area.
More options of fresh fruit for breakfast would’ve been nice.

What could be improved: The pool was very cold and in the shade, not many sun loungers and a couple were broken.
I attended with my two children so unfortunately that meant that the children had to share the large circular bed and I was in the sofa bed which wasn’t the most comfortable.

  • Superb – Fergal from United Kingdom – 3 June 2025 (9/10)

Everything, just so beautiful and clean

  • Very good – Fiona from Australia – 25 May 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: The walk from train station with suitcases was challenging

  • Would stay here again if I come back to Rome – Jennifer from Ireland – 16 April 2025 (8/10)

We had such a lovely stay here – nice location to termini train station too . Staff were so friendly and helpful and the spa is 100% worth a visit

  • Good location by transport links – nice staff and great breakfast!! – Helena from United Kingdom – 2 April 2025 (8/10)

    Location and breakfast.

What could be improved: It was. noisy outside my window but it is a capital city!!

  • Good – Artem from Ukraine – 10 March 2025 (7/10)

What could be improved: the window is of poor quality, you can hear a lot of traffic noise, it is uncomfortable for sleeping
