Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Hotel San Silvestro, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best finds are the ones that surprise you, and this little gem tucked away on Via Del Gambero absolutely did that.

The location alone makes it worth considering. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the Spanish Steps – and I’m talking about an actual leisurely stroll, not that tourist-brochure “walking distance” nonsense. The street itself is this narrow, cobblestoned thing that feels properly Roman, though it can get a bit echo-y when people drag their suitcases over the stones early in the morning. What really sold me though was how the staff actually seemed to care about the place. The guy at reception (I think his name was Marco?) knew exactly which gelato shop to hit up nearby and warned me that the trendy restaurant around the corner charges tourist prices – the kind of insider knowledge you just don’t get at those massive chain hotels.

The rooms aren’t going to win any design awards, but they’re clean and honestly more spacious than I expected for central Rome. The AC works well, which is crucial if you’re visiting in summer, and the windows have decent soundproofing considering you’re in the heart of everything. I stayed on the third floor and could barely hear the street noise, though the church bells from nearby definitely become your morning alarm whether you want them to or not. The bathroom was recently renovated – you can tell because the tiles actually match and the shower pressure is surprisingly good for an older building. One thing that caught me off guard was how quiet the hotel gets at night. Even though Via del Corso is literally around the corner with all its shopping chaos, once you’re inside, it feels like you’re in a different world entirely. The breakfast isn’t anything spectacular, but it gets the job done with decent coffee and fresh pastries from a local bakery.

Here’s the thing about this place – it’s not trying to be something it’s not. It’s a solid, well-run hotel where you can actually get some sleep, the staff knows the neighborhood inside and out, and you’re positioned perfectly to explore Rome without feeling like you need to take the metro everywhere. The value is incredible when you consider that hotels with half the charm charge twice as much just because they have marble lobbies. If you’re the type who spends most of your time out exploring anyway and just wants a reliable, comfortable base, Hotel San Silvestro delivers exactly that.

Reviews

  • EXCELLENT, MERAVIGLIOSO !!!! – Alois from Romania – 1 July 2025 (10/10)

Everything was excellent. A special mention for Roberto and Marco, best receptionist I ever met. They give us the best tips for restaurants, gourmet real Italian food.

What could be improved: Nothing. All was exceptional.

  • Superb – Maria from United States – 30 June 2025 (9/10)

Loved our room. Great staff. Very welcoming knowledgeable and helpful. Very clean. Great sheets.
Unusually good and complete breakfast for Rome.

What could be improved: Elevator does not reach to the breakfast floor (last floor). The steep flight of stairs might be an issue for some.
Staying at the Breakfast floor is noisy, if you wish to sleep-in request a different floor.

  • Exceptional – Zali from Australia – 29 June 2025 (10/10)

  • Lovely visit to Rome! – Cynthia from United States – 19 June 2025 (10/10)

Great location, staff were so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Breakfast included every morning. Excellent service throughout my 8 night stay.

What could be improved: Room was so small. Refrigerator didn’t work. 2 small lamps on the side of the bed didn’t plug into anything as it didn’t work on the Italian plug. One of the outlets on the side of the bed was not attached to the wall. These were definitely noticed issues and I didn’t call in about it. I didn’t want to be bothered during my vacation so they could do their maintenance work. These items should be fixed/removed when a visitor is not using the room.
