Hotel Description
You know what? Hotel Igea surprised me. I’ll be honest—when I first walked up to this place on Via Principe Amedeo, I wasn’t expecting much. The building’s got that classic Roman apartment block feel to it, sort of unassuming from the street, but once you’re inside, it actually has this warm, family-run vibe that bigger hotels just can’t fake.
The location is honestly perfect if you’re doing Rome on a budget but still want to be in the thick of things. You’re literally a three-minute walk from Termini Station (which, I mean, can be a blessing and a curse—super convenient but you’ll hear some street noise). But here’s the thing locals know: this whole area around Principe Amedeo has become pretty legit over the past few years. There’s this incredible little trattoria called Da Valentino just two blocks down that serves the best cacio e pepe I’ve had outside of Trastevere, and you’ve got about six different gelato spots within spitting distance. Plus, you can walk to the Colosseum in maybe fifteen minutes if you cut through the side streets—none of that tourist bus nonsense.
The rooms are clean and functional, though don’t expect any Instagram moments. I stayed in one facing the courtyard (definitely request this if you’re a light sleeper), and it was surprisingly quiet for being so close to the station. The AC worked great, which honestly matters more than fancy marble when you’re dealing with Roman summers. The staff—and this is where you really feel that 3-star hotel charm—actually remember your name after the first day. Maria at the front desk gave me the most detailed hand-drawn map of the neighborhood, complete with her personal restaurant recommendations and which metro entrances to avoid during rush hour. You just don’t get that kind of attention at the big chains. The breakfast is pretty standard Continental stuff, but the coffee is legit Italian strong, and they’ve got fresh cornetti that are still warm if you get down there early enough. One small thing that bugged me: the WiFi gets spotty on the upper floors, and there’s no elevator music (which sounds weird to complain about, but the silence makes those old elevator rides feel eternal). Overall though, for the price point and the location, Hotel Igea does exactly what it promises. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need in a city like Rome.
