Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be straight with you about Hotel Fontana – it’s one of those places that completely punches above its weight class, and honestly, the location is pretty ridiculous when you think about it. You’re literally sleeping about 30 seconds from the Trevi Fountain, which sounds amazing until you realize what that actually means at 7 AM when the tour groups start arriving. But here’s the thing – the hotel has been here since forever (I mean, the building’s got that old Roman charm), and they’ve figured out how to make it work. The rooms facing the fountain can get noisy during peak hours, sure, but if you’re the type who wants to grab a coffee and watch the sunrise hit those Baroque sculptures before the crowds descend, well, that’s pretty magical.

The staff actually knows the neighborhood, which is rarer than you’d think in this part of Rome. They’ll tell you to hit the gelateria on Via del Lavatore instead of the touristy spots right by the fountain – and trust me, it’s worth the two-minute walk. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star in central Rome: clean, comfortable enough, with that slightly quirky European plumbing that keeps things interesting. Some have been updated more recently than others, so it’s worth asking when you book. The AC works (crucial in Roman summers), and honestly, the shower pressure is better than some 4-star places I’ve stayed at near the Vatican.

What really gets me about this place is how it manages to feel like a neighborhood hotel even though you’re in the absolute heart of tourist Rome. Maybe it’s because the Trevi area still has actual Romans living and working here – there’s a pharmacy next door, a decent little restaurant around the corner on Via del Muratte that locals actually eat at, and you can walk to Pantheon in about eight minutes without dealing with the main tourist drags. The 8.1 rating makes sense because it’s not trying to be something it’s not – it’s a comfortable, well-located base that doesn’t break the bank. You’re paying for the location, obviously, but you’re also getting a place that’s been hosting travelers for decades and has the routine down pat. Just don’t expect a gym or room service – this is old-school Roman hospitality, which means good beds, strong coffee in the morning, and the kind of local knowledge that actually makes your trip better.

Reviews

  • Enjoyed very much but would not choose the location again due to the constant large crowds. Sometimes tough just to get – Steve from United States – 14 June 2025 (9/10)

Near everything we wanted to see.

What could be improved: Noisy all night with trevi action all night.

  • Gorgeous location. Very busy with fountain out door. – Lori from Canada – 13 June 2025 (8/10)

    Location. Roof top patio.

What could be improved: Small room. Loud with fountain.

  • Superb – Julia from Poland – 10 June 2025 (9/10)

    Widok na fontannę do Trevi

  • Stunning views – Clair from United Kingdom – 27 May 2025 (9/10)

Stunning view over fountain. Young lady on reception was fantastic. Lovely breakfast.

What could be improved: Could have done with a kettle in the room. The men on reception were just downright rude. Paid almost £700 for a 2 night stay and they didn't even have the manners to say thank you or goodbye when we were leaving. They were the reasons for the markdowns on a lovely stay.

  • Loved it – Alison from South Africa – 24 April 2025 (9/10)

    The setting!

  • Very good – Yardley from United Kingdom – 4 April 2025 (8/10)

Fantastic views of the fountain. Great atmosphere. Central location to Museums & historical sites. Good Breakfast!

What could be improved: Trevi queues are now managed by people blowing whistles constantly,

  • Worth the money but expect more of a B&B style. – Therese from United States – 24 January 2025 (8/10)

The location, the free breakfast. Felt more like a B and B

What could be improved: We weren’t told about the breakfast on arrival. The staff was nice but not extremely helpful.

  • Happy Christmas Holidays in Hotel Fontana – Allblacksno1 from Malta – 21 December 2024 (8/10)

Central, the view and the staff were very helpful and nice. Very good breakfast with a view. The staff noticed that it was my partner's birthday and sang her Happy Birthday giving her a cornetto with a candle. Very nice gesture. Will return.

What could be improved: Shower cubicle too small.

  • We had a great time in Rome and the location made it even better. The staff is what would bring you back to the hotel. – Gemma from United Kingdom – 19 December 2024 (8/10)

The location and view from the hotel was the best thing about our experience.

What could be improved: It could do with a little extra tlc as it’s very tired looking. Our rooms bathroom wasn’t great and we couldn’t use it after our first day. The hotel however were super helpful and they gave us another room to use facilities in and they got to work on the bathroom as soon as we checked out and they appreciated us telling them the issues.

  • Dont miss this gem of a hotel – Dawn from United Kingdom – 7 December 2024 (9/10)

Perfect location with the breakfast room overlooking the beaitiful Trevi Fountain. Lovely helpful staff and room was cleaned daily. Fridge in room. Great shower. The hotel has lovely italian character. Breakfast was continental and plenty of choice.

What could be improved: The only thing and this isnt a fault of the hotel was that there was some noise from the street in the early hours. The bins being emptied and street cleaning. Wouldnt stop me staying there again.
