Hotel Contilia Overview

Honestly, when I first walked up to Hotel Contilia on Via Principe Amedeo, I wasn’t expecting much – I mean, it’s literally around the corner from Termini Station, and that area can be pretty gritty. But you know what? This place surprised me in the best way possible. The building itself has this old Roman charm that somehow manages to feel both authentic and welcoming, not like those sterile chain hotels you see everywhere.

The location is actually brilliant if you think about it strategically. Sure, you’re hearing the occasional rumble of trains and there’s definitely some street noise (pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper), but being this close to Termini means you can literally roll out of bed and catch the Leonardo Express to the airport. And here’s something most people don’t realize – you’re about a twelve-minute walk to the Colosseum, maybe fifteen if you’re dragging luggage. The neighborhood gets a bad rap, but Via Principe Amedeo has some seriously good Ethiopian restaurants and little grocery stores that stay open late. There’s this tiny place called Trattoria Pizzeria da Valentino just two blocks down that locals actually go to, not just tourists.

What really sold me on Hotel Contilia though was the staff – they actually seem to care about what they’re doing. The guy at check-in (I think his name was Marco?) gave me this whole rundown of which metro lines to avoid during rush hour and where to get the best gelato nearby. The rooms are clean and comfortable, nothing fancy but everything works properly, which honestly is more than I can say for some four-star places I’ve stayed in Rome. The WiFi is solid, the air conditioning actually cools the room, and the shower has decent water pressure. Small things, but they matter when you’re dealing with jet lag and walking around cobblestones all day. I did notice the walls are a bit thin – could hear my neighbors’ TV one night – but it wasn’t terrible. The breakfast is pretty standard continental fare, though they do have proper espresso and the pastries are from a local bakery, not some frozen nonsense. For an 8.1 rating, I’d say that’s about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it gets the job done really well at a fair price, especially considering you’re in the heart of Rome.
