Hotel Description

So I’ll be honest – Hotel Cilicia isn’t going to blow your mind with marble lobbies or infinity pools, but there’s something really solid about this place that keeps me coming back when I’m in Rome. It’s tucked away on Via Cilicia in San Giovanni, which I know sounds totally off the beaten path if you’re thinking Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, but honestly? That’s exactly why it works.

The San Giovanni area has this lived-in Roman feel that you just don’t get near the tourist centers. You’ve got actual Romans walking their dogs, real neighborhood trattorias (there’s this incredible little place called Da Valentino about three blocks away that locals pack every night), and the metro station is literally a five-minute walk. The A line takes you straight into the heart of everything, but when you come back at night, you’re in this quieter pocket where you can actually hear yourself think. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star – clean, functional, decent-sized by Roman standards which, let’s face it, means you won’t be doing yoga on the floor but you’re not sleeping in a closet either. The AC actually works, which is more than I can say for some pricier places I’ve stayed in this city.

What really gets me about Hotel Cilicia is the staff – they’re not putting on some fancy hotel performance, they’re just genuinely helpful people who know their neighborhood. When I had that disaster with my flight getting canceled last spring, the guy at the front desk (I think his name was Marco?) actually called around to help me find the best rebooking options. You know what I mean? That’s the kind of thing that matters when you’re stressed and dealing with travel chaos. The breakfast isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s proper Italian – good coffee, fresh cornetti, and they don’t try to do some weird international buffet thing that pleases nobody. Check-in is usually smooth, though I’d avoid arriving during the afternoon riposo hours if you can help it. The building itself has that slightly worn Roman elegance – you can tell it’s been around for decades, but in a charming way, not a falling-apart way. Street noise is pretty minimal since you’re off the main drags, though if you’re a super light sleeper, maybe mention it when you book and they’ll usually sort you out with a room facing the courtyard. I mean, for the price point and the genuine Roman neighborhood experience, it’s actually a pretty sweet deal – especially if you’re the type who wants to explore the city rather than hang out in your hotel room all day.

  • Very good – Carole from France – 23 January 2025 (8/10)

Spacious room, quiet and easy access by car and great breakfast

What could be improved: Some old elements in the bathroom but they are being addressed as the hotel started the renovation just a few days after our stay.

  • Very good – Lorand from Romania – 4 October 2024 (8/10)

The staff was extremly polite and friendly
    Very comfortable beds
About 15min walk from a metro station and 8min from bus stops

What could be improved: A bit of wear and tear in the rooms (its an older building)

  • Very good – Yanbuloğlu from Austria – 15 August 2024 (8/10)

All of the facilities was great for this price

What could be improved: Location is a bit far for walking and the buses are not good enough

  • Great experience overall, the hotel was in a great location to enjoy the Jazz Festival. – David from United States – 26 July 2024 (8/10)

Great location, older property but lots of charm.

What could be improved: The breakfast was very minimal. The eggs ran out a hour before the end of the breakfast service.

  • I was ok. If it had a staff on premises, it will be great – Karen from United States – 2 June 2024 (7/10)

    It was clean

What could be improved: There was not staff in the hotel to ask questions or ask for requests

  • Very good – Danijela from Serbia – 3 March 2024 (8/10)

    The staff was amazing!

What could be improved: Breakfast could be a way better and bathroom needs updating (shower door was nearly falling off)

  • Very good – Romina from Albania – 6 February 2024 (8/10)

The staff was very polite and friendly, always willing to respond and help. The room was very clean and warm. Location is very good, near the bus station ( 10 min walk). You could reach Colosseum very easily in 30 min walking.

What could be improved: It was very basic, like if you needed some accesories, like slippers to walk around the room, or other neccesities for the bathroom, you could not find in the room

  • Good – Kateryna from United Kingdom – 27 January 2024 (7/10)

We were staying at this hotel for 4 days in January. Room for two ( the cheapest and the simplest one). We had chance to live in two a bit different rooms.

Good location. The Hotel is located in 20 minutes by walk from The Basilica of St. John, 3/5 minutes from the closest bus stop and 5/10 minutes from the restaurants.

The rooms were clean with a lot of towels and a big beds. The room 102 has a view on courtyard, and the room 103 was bigger than previous one with view on the footpath. The rooms were spacious with cozy designs. The room has two mirrors which makes bigger space. The room 102 has two windows and the rooms 103 has just one, but both rooms were very light. You can find ventilations in the rooms as well.

The breakfast is quite good with enough sweets.

Staff are quite friendly. A man with glasses who works on the reception in the evening was very kind, friendly and polite. He helped us to understand what we need to visit in Rome, provided service. He makes lovely atmosphere that force to come back in this hotel. A woman with glasses who works on the reception was kind as well.

Despite the fact that the teapot wasn’t provided in the room, there was a free service providing hot water in the teapot for guests at the bar ( you can make your own tea).

Unfortunately, In both rooms, the bathrooms didn’t have a stable water pressure (sometimes it was hot, sometimes it was cold) and broken doors. The fridge in the room 102 didn’t work. The room 103 had ventilation in the bathroom that didn’t switched off which makes cold temperature.

Overall, we liked our stay because of cozy design and spacious rooms. The hotel is located in perfect location which is a great plus.

  • Good value for money – Marco from Ireland – 30 October 2023 (8/10)

Quiet despite major road close by. Supermarkets, Imbiss, bus stations close by. Spacious rooms. 20minute walk to Colosseum.

What could be improved: Shower not made for tall people. TV set not capable to display HD, tv channels are therefore a listening experience only.
