Hotel Description

Hotel 87 eighty-seven caught my eye immediately – and honestly, it’s hard to miss with that sleek glass facade sitting right on Via del Tritone. You know what struck me first? The way they’ve managed to create this contemporary art-focused space without making it feel cold or pretentious. The lobby has this curated gallery vibe going on, but in a good way – like someone with actual taste picked each piece rather than just ordering “modern art” from a catalog.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to be in the thick of things without the total chaos of being right on the Spanish Steps themselves. I mean, you’re literally a three-minute walk from all that madness, but Via del Tritone gives you this nice buffer zone. What I really appreciated was how easy it was to grab morning coffee at the little places locals actually use – there’s this spot called Bar del Tritone just down the street where the barista remembers your order after two days. The metro connection at Barberini is super convenient too, though honestly, you’ll probably end up walking everywhere because Rome’s just built for it.

The rooms themselves have this boutique hotel feel that actually works – clean lines, good lighting (finally, a hotel that gets lighting right), and they’ve clearly put thought into the details. The bathrooms are modern without being stark, and the beds are legitimately comfortable, not just hotel-marketing comfortable. I stayed during a busy September week and was pleasantly surprised by how quiet it was at night, especially considering you’re on a main street. The art theme continues in the rooms, but they’ve kept it subtle – a few carefully chosen pieces rather than overwhelming you with gallery walls.

What really sets this place apart is the staff’s approach – they seem to genuinely know the neighborhood and can point you toward things that aren’t just tourist traps. The concierge suggested this little trattoria called Da Valentino that I never would have found on my own, tucked away on a side street near Piazza Barberini. Service feels personal without being intrusive, which is honestly harder to achieve than you’d think.

The 7.9 rating feels about right – it’s solidly good without being extraordinary. The price point reflects the location and quality, though it’s definitely not budget territory. If you’re looking for that classic Roman palazzo experience, this isn’t it – but if you want something contemporary and well-executed in a prime spot, it delivers. The breakfast situation is decent but not spectacular, and the common areas can feel a bit cramped when it’s busy, but these are minor quibbles. You’re really paying for the location, the thoughtful design, and the fact that it feels like a place where actual travelers stay, not just tour groups checking boxes.

Reviews

  • Good – Susan from United Kingdom – 5 July 2025 (7/10)

Location was excellent for walking to the Trevi fountain and other landmarks.

What could be improved: Rooftop offered limited shade and no sunbathing opportunity.
    No Sky on TV.

  • Great location. A place to stay and less to enjoy – Rotem from Israel – 23 June 2025 (7/10)

The location was perfect – walking distance from central locations like the Trevi fountain and the Spanish Stairs, very good restaurants and shopping centers.
    The breakfast was nice.

What could be improved: This place is generally ok but needs improvements, especially the sanitary facilities- it was really difficult setting the water temperature in the shower (the temperature changes frequently from really hot to freezing), the shower and sink drainage made weird noises even when not in use.
    The bed wasn’t so comfortable.
There is a TV but not a smart one (only channels, not apps)
