Hotel Description
I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Holiday 168 on Via Principe Amedeo, I wasn’t expecting much. The street itself is pretty typical for the Esquilino neighborhood, you know? It’s got that lived-in Roman feel with locals hanging laundry from balconies and the occasional tourist wheeling luggage over cobblestones. But once you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about this place.
The thing about staying near Termini Station is that it can go either way – you’re either dealing with sketch factor or you’ve found a gem that knows how to work with the location rather than against it. Holiday 168 definitely falls into the latter category. The staff genuinely seem to get that most of their guests are either just arriving in Rome (probably jet-lagged and slightly overwhelmed) or about to leave (frantically trying to figure out train schedules). They’ve got this down to a science, actually – I watched them help three different families navigate the metro system during my check-in alone. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully designed rather than flashy. You’ve got your standard hotel setup, but there are these little touches that show they understand travelers. Like, the bathroom actually has enough shelf space for your toiletries, and the Wi-Fi doesn’t mysteriously cut out every twenty minutes. The beds are properly comfortable too – I mean, after walking around Rome all day, you want to actually sleep, not toss and turn on some thin mattress. The soundproofing is surprisingly good considering you’re basically in the heart of one of Rome’s busiest transport hubs.
What really won me over, though, is how the location works in your favor once you figure it out. Sure, Via Principe Amedeo isn’t going to win any beauty contests, but you’re literally a five-minute walk from trains that’ll take you anywhere in the city. The Colosseum? Fifteen minutes on foot if you’re feeling ambitious, or hop on the metro and you’re there in three stops. Santa Maria Maggiore is practically around the corner, and honestly, that whole area comes alive in the evenings when locals are heading home from work. There’s this little alimentari next door where the owner started recognizing me after two days – you can grab decent coffee and pastries without the tourist markup you’ll find near the major sites. The neighborhood has this authentic Roman working-class vibe that you don’t get when you’re staying in the centro storico bubble. Plus, and this is crucial if you’re doing any day trips, you can literally roll out of bed and catch early trains to Florence or Naples without dealing with cross-city transit drama. I’ve stayed in fancier places in Rome, but Holiday 168 just makes sense. It’s the kind of hotel that doesn’t try to be something it’s not – instead, it does exactly what it promises really, really well.
