Hotel Description

You know what? The Gemelli Hotel isn’t trying to be something it’s not, and honestly, that’s exactly why it works so well. Tucked away on Via della Pineta Sacchetti in the Monte Mario area, it’s one of those places that feels like a genuine neighborhood find rather than a tourist trap. I mean, you’re still in Rome – you can get to the Vatican in about 15 minutes by bus – but you’re staying where actual Romans live and work. The street itself is pretty quiet, lined with those characteristic Roman apartment buildings and local shops where the barista actually remembers your order after a couple days.

The hotel itself has that comfortable, lived-in feel that three-star places do best when they’re run by people who actually care. The rooms aren’t huge (this is Europe, after all), but they’re thoughtfully laid out with decent storage and – thank god – air conditioning that actually works during those brutal Roman summers. What really struck me was how clean everything was, and I’m talking about the kind of clean that extends to the corners and behind furniture, not just the obvious stuff. The breakfast spread is solid too, with proper Italian coffee and fresh cornetti alongside the usual international options. Actually, the coffee alone makes it worth staying here – they’ve got one of those serious espresso machines, not the push-button hotel nonsense.

Here’s the thing about this location that most people don’t realize until they’re here: you’re perfectly positioned to avoid the chaos of central Rome when you want to, but you’re never more than 20 minutes from anywhere important. The Monte Mario area has this almost village-like quality in the evenings, with families out walking and kids playing in the small parks. There’s a fantastic family-run pizzeria just down the street (Al Presidente – don’t let the name fool you, it’s totally unpretentious) and a proper alimentari where you can grab snacks and drinks without paying tourist prices. The staff at Gemelli seem to know all the local spots too, and they’re genuinely helpful rather than just polite. I had one guy at reception draw me a little map showing the best route to Castel Sant’Angelo that avoided the main tourist crush – that kind of personal touch you just don’t get at the big chain hotels. Sure, the décor isn’t going to win any design awards, but everything works, it’s comfortable, and you’ll sleep well. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need, especially when you’re spending most of your time exploring one of the world’s greatest cities anyway.

  • Good e – Solange from Trinidad and Tobago – 23 May 2024 (9/10)

    The breakfast spread was lovely.
    It's 2mins away from a train station.

What could be improved: Not the best food options around.

  • Superb – Al-shukaili from Ireland – 17 May 2024 (9/10)

    Location. Comfortable. Breakfast

  • Very nice hotel & breakfast – Paolo from Oman – 13 April 2024 (8/10)

I liked the location close to the Hospital and the railway station. The room is clean and meeting the expectation. The breakfast, considering the average in the other hotels in Rome, is superbe!

What could be improved: Breakfast level is good, but the adoption of plastic glasses is not appropriate for quality and environmental aspects.

  • Superb – Christos from Cyprus – 8 April 2024 (9/10)

    – The room was spacious and the bed very comfortable
    – The buffet breakfast did not have huge variety, but who needs that? The pastries and especially the freshly baked croissants were great.
    – Convenient location for the Gemelli hospital in a quiet street.

What could be improved: – The wifi connection at my room on the 1st floor was poor

  • Excellent value, would defiantly book again. – Perkins from United States – 5 June 2023 (9/10)

    Excellent breakfast.

What could be improved: The shower was extremely claustrophobic and slippery. There are no USB charging provisions.
