Domus Sessoriana Overview

You know what struck me first about Domus Sessoriana? The name sounds way fancier than what you’d expect from a 3-star place near Termini Station, but honestly, that’s part of its charm. I mean, you’re literally staying next to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme – this ancient church that most tourists completely miss because they’re rushing between the Colosseum and the main train station. The hotel sits right on this quiet little piazza that feels like a secret pocket of old Rome, even though you’re maybe a 12-minute walk from all the chaos of Termini.

The building itself has that sort of understated Roman elegance – nothing flashy, but you can tell it’s been thoughtfully maintained. What I really appreciated was how the staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood. When I asked about dinner recommendations, the guy at the front desk didn’t just hand me a tourist map – he told me about this little trattoria on Via Merulana where locals go, and warned me that the restaurant across the street looks authentic but is basically a tourist trap. Little things like that make a difference when you’re trying to feel less like a walking ATM in Rome. The rooms are clean and comfortable without being remarkable – think good quality linens, decent shower pressure, and windows that actually block out street noise (which matters more than you’d think in this city).

I’ll be honest, the area doesn’t look like much at first glance. You’ve got the basilica, some residential buildings, and it’s definitely not the Rome of Instagram photos. But that’s exactly why it works. You’re close enough to walk to San Giovanni in Laterano in one direction, or cut through the side streets to reach the Colosseum area without dealing with the main tourist drags. The 3 tram line runs right nearby if you want to get to Trastevere without the hassle, and there’s actually decent parking on the surrounding streets if you’re crazy enough to drive in Rome. For an 8-rated 3-star hotel, Domus Sessoriana delivers exactly what it promises – a solid base in a genuinely Roman neighborhood where you’ll hear more Italian than English on the street corners, and where the morning espresso at the corner bar costs €1.20 instead of €3.50.

Reviews of Domus Sessoriana

  • Very good – Fabrizio from Italy – 26 June 2025 (8/10)

Great location, not far from Termini and San Giovanni in Laterano.

    Ambience.

    Helpful staff.

What could be improved: Internet not available in certain rooms.

Few more options for breakfast would be great, particularly if you are staying more than a day or two…

  • If you enjoyed Conclave … 🙂 – Catherine from United Kingdom – 1 June 2025 (8/10)

I hadn’t read the description so didn’t realise it was a converted monastery complex ! A great surprise to be staying somewhere so unique – fantastic roof terrace too

What could be improved: Rooms large but quite austere – but that’s in keeping with the monastery context

  • Historical place and unique experience – Pavel from Russia – 25 May 2025 (9/10)

    Heritage and lovely architecture

What could be improved: Rooms are too ascetic but someone might find it as unique experience, anyway nothing that I can call bad

  • A unique place brimming with history, fitting for a stay in Rome – Adrian from United Kingdom – 24 May 2025 (9/10)

What a location, attached to a church. Loved its character and room was perfect. Rarely have I stayed in such unique a spot. Staff at reception very helpful with taxis to airport etc

What could be improved: Just that I couldn’t stay longer

  • Lovely but staff give incorrect information on anything outside the hotel – Rosemary from United Kingdom – 12 May 2025 (8/10)

    Amazing property.

What could be improved: Staff very polite but not knowledgeable when asked about directions or information on locations or tickets. Walked miles on the wrong roads

  • Superb – Zuzana from Czech Republic – 7 May 2025 (9/10)

Amazing view… great position… nice staff

What could be improved: Breakfast without vegetable and fruits

The room was clean, I liked it
I also liked the proximity to church that enabled us to attend mass at 8:00 am in the morning

What could be improved: There was not wifi in the room. The signal from receiption was to weak in the room
    Breakfast had very limited options

  • Lovely stay with polite and helpful staff – Libby from United Kingdom – 28 November 2024 (8/10)

Great location within walking distance to the colosseum, very friendly and helpful staff who guided us around Rome by making us aware of public transport routes and times etc. Breakfast was nice and the rooms were clean and just as expected, basic rooms however perfect for a short city break
