Hotel Description

Look, I’ve walked past the Basilica Hotel probably a hundred times before actually staying there – it sits right on Via Cavour in Monti, which honestly is one of those streets where you’re always rushing somewhere else. But here’s the thing about this place: it’s got that sweet spot thing figured out where you’re close enough to everything that matters without being in the middle of the tourist chaos.

The hotel itself is what I’d call properly Roman – not trying to be fancy, just solid and comfortable in that way that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than some corporate chain. The rooms are clean and thoughtfully put together, and you know what really impressed me? The staff actually knows the neighborhood. I mean, they’ll tell you which gelato place on Via dei Serpenti is worth the walk (it’s Fatamorgana, by the way) and which entrance to use for the Colosseum when the main one’s packed. The building has this quiet, old-school vibe – thick walls that actually keep the street noise down, which is kind of miraculous given that you’re literally in the heart of Rome.

What really sold me on this place though is the location game they’ve got going. You’re maybe a five-minute walk from Cavour metro stop, which sounds boring until you realize you can be at the Spanish Steps in ten minutes or Termini in about the same time. But more importantly – and this is something most hotels won’t tell you – you’re right in Monti, which means you’re surrounded by these tiny streets full of actual Romans doing actual Roman things. There’s this little wine bar called Il Sorpasso just around the corner that doesn’t even have a proper sign, and honestly some of the best carbonara I’ve had was at a place called Flavio al Velavevodetto that’s maybe a seven-minute walk away. The morning routine here is pretty perfect too – you can grab proper coffee at the bar downstairs (they actually know how to make it), then wander over to the Mercato di Monti if it’s weekend, or just walk through the winding streets toward the Colosseum. I stayed here during both tourist season and in February when Rome gets quiet, and the hotel holds up either way. Sure, it’s not going to blow your mind with amenities or anything, but that 8.7 rating makes sense when you factor in that they’ve basically nailed the fundamentals while putting you in a spot where you can actually experience Rome like someone who lives here.

  • Convenient location and well maintained hotel. – Zoe from United Kingdom – 24 June 2025 (8/10)

Clean and exactly as described. Room was a good size and air con efficient which was great as hot outside. Easy to walk to from the main station and an easy walk to the colosseum

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Great central hotel in a convent, we would stay here again! – Sabina from United States – 22 June 2025 (10/10)

Great central location, near train station…The breakfast buffet is lovely, the staff is very helpful, even the economy rooms are fine, but the ‘nicer’ rooms are worth it.

What could be improved: Nothing, everything very adequate!

  • It was a gem. – Lars from United Kingdom – 17 June 2025 (10/10)

    Location, Breakfast, Staff and Cleanliness

  • Bravo Brilliant Biscilica Hotel – Charles from United Kingdom – 11 June 2025 (9/10)

On arrival we were very warmly greeted with the hotel reception staff who quickly checked us in and showed us to our room. The room was in the new building at the back (former convent), the room was spacious, clean and a good size, the corridor was splendid. The location of this hotel is very good, almost across the street from the Santa Maria Maggiore Basillica, which can be seen from the breakfast balcony. Close to Republica tube station, Termini bus station and 15 minutes stroll from the Colluseum and many other attractions. As most people state the breakfast is plentiful and there is a balcony so you can watch the world go by as you enjoy the varied breakfast options, and yes ther aer lots of patries!!

There is a street very close to the hotel called Via Urbana which has lots of nice restaurants and bars, we ate at Taverna Urbana which was very nice!

The staff were exceptionally attentive during our stat and I would definately return to the hotel!

What could be improved: There is a communal toilet on the 2nd floor wiht a shower, we asked if we could use the shower when we collected our bags later in the day to freshen up before our flight, we were told there was no-one to give us towels, we could use the shower but would have to find a way to dry off 🙂

  • Exceptional – Jacqueline from United States – 9 June 2025 (10/10)

Loved the room design and breakfast!

    What could be improved: Nothing
