You know what? I’ve walked past the Alpi Hotel probably a dozen times before I actually stayed there, and honestly, I’d been missing out. It sits right there on Via Castelfidardo – which, if you don’t know Rome well, is basically a stone’s throw from Termini Station but far enough away that you’re not dealing with the chaos of tourists dragging suitcases at 6 AM. The building itself has that classic Roman charm without being overly fancy about it, and when you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone actually cares about the details here.

The lobby smells faintly of espresso and something citrusy – maybe it’s their cleaning products, I don’t know, but it works. What really got me was how the staff seemed to know the neighborhood inside and out. The guy at reception (Marco, I think?) didn’t just tell me where to find good pizza, he actually drew a little map showing me the shortcut through Via Milazzo that cuts five minutes off the walk to this incredible little place locals go to. That’s the kind of stuff you can’t Google, you know? The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star – clean, comfortable beds that don’t make your back ache, and bathrooms that actually have decent water pressure. Nothing revolutionary, but honestly, after a day of walking around Rome in August, revolutionary is the last thing you need.

Here’s what I really appreciated though – the area around the hotel is actually livable. I mean, you’ve got the Castro Pretorio metro stop literally around the corner, which gets you anywhere in the city without having to deal with the tourist crush at Termini. There’s a little grocery store on Via Castelfidardo where the owner’s cat sleeps on the counter, and this café next door where Romans actually drink their morning coffee (not the tourist traps with the laminated menus). The hotel itself gets surprisingly quiet at night considering you’re so close to the station – I was worried about noise, but their windows must be pretty decent because I slept through the night without any issues.

Look, I’ll be straight with you – this isn’t the kind of place you’ll be posting Instagram stories about all day. The décor is pleasant but not exactly cutting-edge, and the breakfast is good but not spectacular. But sometimes that’s exactly what you want. It’s the kind of hotel where you can drop your bags, grab a quick shower, and head out knowing you’ve got a comfortable bed waiting for you later. Plus, with an 8.7 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’re doing something right. If you’re the type who wants to actually explore Rome instead of spending half your vacation in hotel amenities, the Alpi gets you out the door and into the real city faster than most places I’ve stayed.

  The location, near the main train station, was very convenient and also a lot quieter than being in the old city. Most attractions were within a 30 minute walk and, since it was near the train station, the metro was convenient for longer distances.. We had some good meals in nearby restaurants. We were lucky enough to have a little balcony to sit out on when the weather was nice (and it was nice most of our visit). The staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good, although I would note that it was strictly a buffet, so only the coffee was made to order. The room was small but comfortable and the bathroom quite large with good water pressure.
